First Id like to say this is the best game I have played for NDS to date. If your hunting for Hack and Slash RPGs this game has your number. Don’t get me wrong, I love Final Fantasy as well as Castlevania, but this game just brings something else to the table. Its strength is its simplicity. When your not out in the field the game gives you just what you need and nothing more: A Weapons/Items Shop, a Save/Inn Menu, and a handful of NPCs to talk to. There isn’t even a town for you to explore, but be sure to speak with the locals often as they provide you with useful items and key points to the story line (most of witch is irrelevant to the game itself). When you enter the “Abyss” that’s where the real fun begins. There are four weapon types: Sword, Spear, Axe, Bow, Rod. The Sword is the most useful weapon (as usual) its fast its attack is good and it leaves little room for weakness. The Spear, will be your best weapon threw most of the game because of its superior attack power though it can be a little unwieldy. The Axe has a tremendously high attack, but it is very slow and the corresponding abilities are not so useful. The Bow leaves a lot to be desired. Its swing speed is average but cant be used to combo and sadly its skills do not make up for this fact. If you want a real challenge try beating the game using only the Rod and magic spells. Otherwise you will never use this weapon. I beat the game before I was able to test it but the game is two player capable.
Sound: 10/10
Each of the character options comes with a different voice but the only words you’ll ever form are “Yah!” “Oof”, “Ahh” and “Hiya!” Yet I never get tired of it. The monsters make a variety of sounds when attacking or being hit as well that are charming enough I guess. Spells and the sound of your sword swinging are appropriate as well but the highlight of this game’s sound is its Music. Its genius. Reminiscent of the RPGs of old these songs will take you away to another world.
Graphics: 7.5/10
Unfortunately I cant say the graphics are awesome. They lack a certain flash or flare. There is no “eye-popping” action or spectacular artwork here. Just smooth and simple yet satisfying. At least you wont have to worry about “Is that his leg, his spear or is it….?”
Controls: 8/10
I’m giving eight here because the controls are easy to use. There is little use for the stylus but with a near mindless hack and slash, you don’t want things to get to complicated.
Gameplay: 10/10
There is something magical about this game. Each and every level /stage has a new monster and a new skill/spell for you to learn. The elements get involved and the terrain variation is enough to keep you engaged and wanting to see what will come next. At the end of each stage there is a boss for you to beat, each one is unique enough to make you switch up your attack style but not so specific as to require you to have a particular weapon. Overall Id say the only thing lacking in game play is the total number of hours it takes to beat this game. Cross your fingers for a sequel.
